Why Lawlessness in New Orleans?
Why does every locality in the nation have law enforcement? We have law enforcement to enforce laws. New Orleans is just like every city in America. There are rapes, murders, and corporate crimes in every city. There is police brutality, homelessness, substance abuse, mental illness, citizens in need of dialysis, surgeries, medications...People are on their way right now to pick up their prescriptions for high blood pressure. SOmeone in the US is checking their blood sugar right now. Someone is shooting up, someone is in rehab... Someone is on their way to see their therapist, or to follow up with their psychiatrist so that their psychotropic meds can be evaluated or tweaked. New Orleans is no different in that regard. New Orleans was shut down by a natural disaster. Everything shut down. The methadone clinic, the mental health clinic, the Walgreens...everything! The grocery store was not open for business as usual.
What happens when the services and basic necessities of a city, town, society are shut down? Forget the fact that they are surrounded by water and trapped to a large degree. What happens? In small towns across America, people are breaking in to drug stores and homes to steal drugs and weapons. Why would these things stop in New Orleans because of a flood?
When you haven't eaten for days is it looting if you see food behind a locked glass door? Yes, maybe by definition. BUT WHO GIVES A SH*T!!!!!!! PEOPLE ARE STARVING!!!! You may have seen an adult take the food, but do you know if they took it for the sick elderly person or the child, or the woman who wants to breat fed the new born but can't because she hasn't eaten in hours or days????? What's happening to those with schizophrenia who don't have their meds? What's happening to those who were suicidal before this happened?
In desperate situations the abnormal becomes normal for survival!!!! I personally can't say that I have been there and done that! I pray to God that I will never have to be in that situation to have to decide what is right, just or moral when my life is in jeopardy.
