Local forum explores impact of race on news, media --The Capital Times
The Capital Times: "Life experience - including race and ethnicity - shapes views of the news, a group of local residents and media representatives demonstrated Thursday.
The arrival of Hurricane Katrina evacuees in Madison, the trial of a Hmong hunter charged with murder, allegations of misconduct by four white legislators and a high-ranking African-American university official - the perception of each story's newsworthiness was affected by the background of those making the calls.
Some 30 participants ranked the news stories of the day for publication or broadcast in a simulation exercise presented Thursday evening by the Race and Media Forum at the Multicultural Center on Madison's south side. The program, now some five years old, grew from a recommendation of a city task force on race, and is sponsored by local media outlets and the Center for Democratic Action.
Thursday's session was moderated by Phil Haslanger, managing editor of The Capital Times, and hosted by the Wisconsin State Journal."
