Claims of prejudice taint recovery -Dallas Morning News | News for Dallas, Texas | Nation

Dallas Morning News | News for Dallas, Texas | Nation: "WASHINGTON – A catastrophic storm of historic proportions, Hurricane Katrina left behind not only a trail of death and destruction, but also one of division.

The pictures of poor, mostly black residents pleading for help linger as searing, defining evidence of the disaster – pictures the White House is still grappling with.

Early on, first lady Laura Bush dismissed as 'disgusting' the notion that class and race determined in any way who lived or died in the storm.

'President Bush cares about everyone in our country,' she told American Urban Radio. 'I know what he's like. And I know what he thinks. And I know how he cares about people.'

Others in the White House and at the Republican National Committee, which has launched an aggressive outreach to blacks and other minorities, have also tried to combat the perception in a flurry of contacts with black pastors and others. And the president has weighed in twice in the last two days, with calls for unity and pledges to combat poverty.

'As we clear away the debris of a hurricane, let us also clear away the legacy of inequality,' he said Friday.

But polls that have charted the racial divide and analysts suggest a tough sell ahead for the president."
