HoustonChronicle.com - Evacuees spreading out from Houston's shelters: "Hurricane Katrina left Kay and Robert Williams with little more than their 1997 Toyota Corolla. After a long, fruitless wait to get housing in Houston, the couple used it to hit the road Saturday bound for Colorado.
Neither had ever been to Colorado but were determined to leave after officials at Reliant Arena announced Saturday that the shelter's housing office was closing and would not reopen today. They settled on Colorado after lining up at a booth inside the arena where officials were offering up to six months free rent, gas money and food for the 16-hour drive there.
'When I get out of here I'm not going to look back. All I want to do now is resolve this,' Robert Williams said. 'I just want to go anywhere.'
As more and more cots and mattresses are removed from the megashelters at Reliant Park and the George R. Brown Convention Center, local officials are facing new challenges as the bulk of Katrina's evacuees — still in need of assistance and support — disperse throughout the city and Harris County."
