HoustonChronicle.com - Grief, anxiety and depression follow disasters: "She was inconsolable, a 9-year-old Katrina evacuee who'd just learned that her missing grandmother had drowned in the floodwaters that engulfed New Orleans.
Sobbing uncontrollably, unable to concentrate, the girl was brought to her Alief school counselor, who encouraged her to express her feelings — through a letter that told her late grandmother that she missed her and a drawing that depicted the two together again.
'It worked for the moment — she stopped crying and her mood picked up,' said Vivian Suarez, the counselor at Hicks Elementary School, 'but when she returned the next Monday, after attending the funeral, she was weepy again. We had to start over.'"
