The South End Newspaper - Cornel West says race a factor in Katrina - FEATURES - News: "Skin color still matters in the United States and is responsible for the depressed state of black Americans from the rooftops of New Orleans to the streets of Los Angeles, Chicago and Detroit, said noted intellectual Dr. Cornel West.

A professor of African-American Studies and Philosophy of Religion at Harvard University, West, 52, visited the Detroit Public Library Wednesday, where he spoke to an overwhelmingly black audience of about 300 people. There, he discussed his latest book, “Democracy Matters: Winning the Fight Against Imperialism.”

“I believe we’re living in one of the bleakest moments of history,” he said.

West graduated from Harvard University magna cum laude, and then he attended Princeton University, where he earned master’s and doctorate degrees.

People of color are disproportionately affected by flawed political policies and by imperialism, he said, citing such examples as the Iraqi war, where “black and brown soldiers” are on the frontlines.

Referencing Hurricane Katrina, which slammed into New Orleans and other Gulf Coast communities Aug. 29, West said of the victims, who were mostly poor and black: “Here in the land of opportunity, here in the land of prosperity, here in the land of ingenuity, we have the living hell of the Super Dome.”

He blasted the Bush administration and the federal government for the slow response to rescue the victims and to bring aid into the communities hit by the hurricane."
