CONSERVATIVES ATTACK KATRINA VICTIMS, WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 22-28, 2005The Wilmington Journal - Article - more national

The Wilmington Journal - Article - more national: "As the nation braces for the aftermath of Hurricane Rita, a powerful Category 3 storm that at press time Wednesday that was picking up both strength and speed as it headed towards the already battered Gulf Coast, the fallout from Hurricane Katrina, and its devastating rampage of New Orleans over three weeks ago, continues.

In their zeal to insulate President Bush from further criticism that his administration dragged its feet in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina because the victims were mostly poor and African-American, a charge the president has vehemently denied, conservative columnists have now set out to demonize the victims, and black leadership.

The unintended result, however, may be a wider and more permanent breach between the African-American community and the Republican Party, which, before Katrina struck the Gulf Coast three weeks ago, made attracting more blacks to the GOP in time for the 2006 congressional and 2008 presidential elections a top priority.

“I can’t help it, “ wrote freelance conservative pundit Karen H. Pittman just after Katrina hit New Orleans, “but I have an inherent antipathy towards that certain sub-species of human animal that is now commandeering the streets of that fetid city, truly now a razed City of the Dead. I haven’t the sufficiently impoverished vernacular to express just how thoroughly revolted I am by these mack daddies and gangstars and brazen bitches-with-FATitudes (-in-these-lowlife-latitudes) when I hear them squawking on-camera about how “ain’t nobody did nuthin’ fa us” — when they were told to leave!”

“The vast majority of these ambulatory refugees were able-bodied and could have at the very least abandoned their low-lying neighborhoods, as they were repeatedly commanded to do,” the fiery Pittman continued.

“I say let the gangsters drown in their toxic soup. If they aren’t killed by Guardsmen, and they aren’t rescued, they will soon be dead of typhoid. So be it. They chose.”

The harsh rhetoric and mocking of the poor and black that died during Katrina, was also fodder for another well-known right-wing firebrand.

“…[R]escuers in New Orleans have discovered a lower-than-expected 424 dead bodies or, as they’re known to liberals, “registered Democratic voters,” wrote conservative columnist Ann Coulter."
