Pro-war rally inappropriate way to mark terror attack anniversary :: The Daily Herald, Provo Utah: "Pro-war rally inappropriate way to mark terror attack anniversary

The Daily Herald

From the (Peoria, Ill.) Journal Star, Sept. 10, 2005

On the fourth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, the Defense Department is distorting and diminishing its significance with a tacky display of jingoism.

Your tax dollars are paying for Sunday's 'America Supports You Freedom Walk,' a grab-bag event that includes a memorial at the Pentagon, a stop at Arlington National
Cemetery, a support-the-troops march ... and a country music concert. The Pentagon says the event is meant to 'highlight the value of freedom.' That's one way to look at it. Another is that it's meant to rejuvenate lagging support for the war and to peddle a mendacious link between 9-11 and Iraq, again.

The walk itself is not ill-conceived. A somber procession from the Pentagon crash site to the National Mall's reflecting pool would be appropriate. But throw in free T-shirts and country music singer Clint Black and you get pre-packaged, plastic patriotism. The T-shirts proclaim 'America Supports You,' which is the name of a federally created organization that bolsters the armed forces.

While supporting the military is a wonderful gesture, it should not be the dominant theme of a memorial event for the 3,000-plus civilians who died. ..."
