KR Washington Bureau | 09/28/2005 | DeLay indicted in campaign finance probe

KR Washington Bureau | 09/28/2005 | DeLay indicted in campaign finance probe: "AUSTIN —A Texas Grand Jury indicted House Majority Leader Tom DeLay Wednesday, forcing one of the most powerful Republicans in the government from his post.

The single criminal charge accused him and two associates of conspiring to circumvent Texas election laws in what turned out to be a successful campaign to win control of the Texas state House way from Democrats.

DeLay angrily denied the charge he said stemmed from a political vendetta against him. ``I have violated no law, no regulation, no rule of the House. I have done nothing unlawful, unethical, or, I might add, unprecedented,’’ he said. ``I am innocent.’’

DeLay, 58, keeps his seat as a House member representing Houston’s southwest suburbs. But he announced soon after the indictment that he was stepping down temporarily from his leadership post as required by party rules."
