Dems rethink strategy

Dems rethink strategy: "House Democrats are considering dropping their boycott of a Republican-controlled select committee that has been examining the bungled government response to Hurricane Katrina.

“I think that is under discussion,” said House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), noting that the option was being talked about in “a lot of places.”

He then qualified the comments, saying that since Republicans had yet to reach out to Democrats about the panel he felt that Democrats were still united behind the boycott.

“[Republicans] didn’t do that, so while [joining] is certainly an option, at this point in time, I think that the feeling is that we need to press for what the American public want, and that is an independent commission,” he said, referring to Democrats’ calls for a panel similar to the Sept. 11 commission to investigate the disaster."
