Nothing Funny About 'Kill Whitie' Parties
Nothing Funny About 'Kill Whitie' Parties: "As a black American, I don't see the irony in these 'Kill Whitie' parties in New York ['Deejay's Appeal: 'Kill the Whiteness Inside'; In Brooklyn, a Club Following Feels the Irony,' news story, Aug. 26].
White people offering free admission to clubgoers bearing buckets of fried chicken is a dangerous joke. It's reminiscent of the blackface era, when whites made fun of blacks by imitating, exaggerating and mocking what were seen as our worst qualities, all in the name of good, clean fun.
The only thing that's ironic, perhaps, is that the people who frequent these parties have managed to lie to themselves about their true feelings on race. Jeremy Parker is no Elvis Presley. He's more like Al Jolson.
